Because of the scarcity of small-capacity diesel engines and the exorbitant cost of gasoline, compressed natural gas (CNG) is quickly taking over as the preferred fuel for many consumers. Despite Maruti’s longtime dominance in the CNG market, Hyundai and Tata are battling for market share as well.

Although CNG vehicles are more expensive than their gasoline equivalents, the cost of operating them is substantially lower, making them a feasible option for city driving. As a result, we’ve compiled a list of all CNG vehicles currently on the market in India, sorted from the least to the most fuel-efficient. 1. Maruti Suzuki Celerio CNG

2. Maruti Suzuki Wagon R CNG

The Wagon R’s most recent upgrade added several new features, but the most significant change was the use of more fuel-efficient engines. Both the 1.0- and 1.2-liter petrol engines are now part of Maruti’s new DualJet family, however, as before, only the 1.0-liter mill comes with a factory-installed CNG kit. Currently, Maruti claims a fuel economy of 34.05km/kg – an increase from 32.52km/kg.

Furthermore, the output of the new dual-fuel engine has been reduced by 3 horsepower when running on petrol and 57 horsepower when on compressed natural gas (CNG) (down by 2hp).

Previously, the Wagon R CNG was only available in the LXi and LXi(O) entry-level trims, but now the mid-level VXi trim adds more features at a premium price. The Wagon R CNG is currently available for a price ranging from Rs 6.35 lakh to Rs 6.81 lakh.

3. Maruti Suzuki Alto 800 CNG

The Alto has a single 796cc, three-cylinder engine that delivers 40 hp and 60Nm of peak torque when equipped with CNG. 7 horsepower and 9 nm less than the gasoline-powered Alto. A 5-speed manual gearbox is available as a transmission option. The Alto 800 is the country’s least powerful CNG vehicle, but it’s also the most affordable at a cost of Rs 4.89 lakh-4.95 lakh at the time of writing.

On the LXi and LXi (O) trims, the Alto 800 CNG is available for an additional ₹95,000/- over the petrol variants. Alto 800 CNG is on the third number in the list of India’s most fuel-efficient CNG-powered vehicles, which claims a fuel economy of 31.59 kilometers per kilogram (km).

4. Maruti Suzuki S-Presso CNG

Maruti Suzuki S-Presso CNG is powered by a 1.0-liter K10B engine paired to a 5-speed manual transmission. The S-Presso CNG is rated at 58 horsepower and 78 nm of torque, with a stated fuel economy of 31.2 kilometers per kilogram. The WagonR CNG has the same engine as the S-Presso, although its fuel efficiency is somewhat better than that of the S-Presso.

The CNG-powered S-Presso has 9 horsepower and 12 Nm less power and torque than the petrol-powered S-Presso. The CNG kit is available on the S-LXi, Presso’s LXi (O), VXi, and VXi(O) trims, unlike other Maruti Suzuki vehicles. Between Rs 5.24 lakh and Rs 5.56 lakh, the S-Presso CNG’s current price is available.

5. Maruti Suzuki Dzire CNG

The compact sedan Dzire is Maruti’s newest CNG variant. At Rs 8.14 lakh for the VXi and Rs 8.82 lakh for the ZXi variants, the Maruti Dzire CNG is now on sale. Private buyers will be able to get their hands on the Dzire CNG for the first time. Previously, it was only available to fleet operators.

The same 1.2-liter K12M DualJet engine powers both the petrol and CNG versions of the Dzire. Despite this, the engine’s peak torque and horsepower have been reduced by 13 hp and 14.5 Nm compared to the petrol model. In CNG spec, the engine produces 77 hp and 98.5 Nm. There are CNG versions of the 1.2-liter K12M engine available for the Dzire for the first time; it is also available in the new Baleno, Wagon R, and Swift. The Dzire CNG, according to Maruti, has a fuel economy rating of 31.12 km/kg, making it the most fuel-efficient CNG car currently available.

6. Hyundai Santro CNG

Hyundai’s CNG lineup features the Santro, which is both the most cheap and the most efficient model. The CNG-spec 1.1-liter engine puts out 60 horsepower and 85.3 pound-feet of torque. Unlike the Celerio CNG and Tiago CNG, which both have three-cylinder engines, the Santro’s 1.1-liter engine has four cylinders, giving it more power and torque.

When it comes to fuel economy, the Santro CNG is ranked fifth among the top five vehicles with a fuel economy of more than 30 kilometres per kilogramme. With prices ranging from Rs 6.09 lakh to Rs 6.38 lakh, the Magna and Sportz models are more expensive than their petrol counterparts by about Rs 69,000 to 76,000.

7. Hyundai Grand i10 Nios CNG

The Hyundai Aura’s hatchback brother, the Grand i10 Nios, is one of the most luxurious and feature-rich CNG vehicles currently on the market. Hyundai’s CNG kit is available on the Nios Magna and Sportz levels, and many features such as automatic air conditioning, an 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system, projector fog lamps, and a reverse parking camera are included. Feel-good amenities are missing from the majority of Maruti Suzuki’s CNG cars because of their low-end trims.

Hyundai’s new Grand i10 Nios is driven by a 1.2-liter, four-cylinder engine that delivers the same 69hp and 95.2Nm of torque as the Aura CNG’s engine. In addition, it boasts a stated fuel economy of 28.5km/kg and is combined with a 5-speed manual gearbox. It costs between Rs 7.07 lakh and Rs 7.60 lakh to buy the Grand i10 Nios CNG.

8. Hyundai Aura CNG

There were no other CNG-powered compact sedans in India before Tata Tigor CNG arrived. For power, the Aura CNG shares the normal model’s 1.2-liter four-cylinder engine, which puts out 69 horsepower and 95.2 lb-ft in CNG. These outputs are down by 14 horsepower and 19 pound-feet of torque compared to when the engine is running on gasoline. Only a 5-speed manual transmission is available for the CNG models.

The Aura CNG from Hyundai is claimed to have a fuel efficiency of 28.4 km/kg, which is just slightly less than the Nios CNG. Only the S trim is available with the CNG option, and it isn’t as well-equipped as the hatchback version. The Aura CNG costs Rs. 95,000 more than the petrol-powered version and is available for a price of Rs. 7.74 lakh.

9. Tata Tigor CNG

The 1.2-liter, three-cylinder Revotron in the Tiago CNG was also used in the Tigor CNG, which was introduced at the same time as the Tiago. The Tigor CNG gets the same 26.49 kilometers per kilogram of fuel economy. The Tigor is more powerful than the Aura CNG, which is its sole competitor in terms of fuel efficiency.

The CNG kit is only available on the XZ and XZ+ trims of the Tigor from Tata. A rain-sensing wiper system and automatic headlamps are only available on the Tigor CNG XZ+ trim, which is available on no other CNG vehicle in the country. Between Rs 7.69 lakh and Rs 8.29 lakh, the Tigor CNG is priced at Rs 90,000 more than similar petrol trims.

10. Tata Tiago CNG

This is the first of Tata’s new CNG-powered vehicles, the Tiago. Its torque is decreased by 13 horsepower and 18 Nm from the petrol Tiago, which has the same 1.2-liter, 3-cylinder Revotron engine, but has 73 horsepower and 95 Nm more power. Tiago is the most powerful CNG vehicle in its class. Tiago CNG prices range from Rs 6.09 lakh to 7.52 lakh, which is around Rs 90,000 more expensive than comparable petrol trims. Tata states that the Tiago CNG has a fuel efficiency of 26.49 km/kg, which isn’t as good as some of its competitors.

Tata offers the CNG kit on all Tiago trims, not just the entry-level XE or mid-level XZ+, unlike other automakers that only sell the kit on the entry-level or mid-level trims. These include amenities such as a 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system, projector headlamps with LED DRLs, an eight-speaker Harman audio system, automatic climate control, and a digital instrument cluster among others. “Premiumization of CNG” in India is Tata’s goal with this strategy.
