The long-awaited Yamaha motorcycles have finally arrived in India. Chihana told Auto Car, “We’re hoping to bring in some huge bikes like the MT-07 or R7. In little amounts, yet enough to meet the needs of our most discerning consumers. The OBD-2 restrictions can be avoided if we can import by this year.”

According to online rumors, Yamaha’s sports and naked motorbikes R7 and MT-07 would be available in India in the near future. Both of these motorcycles have a solid reputation in their respective markets outside of the United States.

In April of 2023, Yamaha is expected to launch two mid-weight sports motorcycles in India, according to sources. In spite of the tight timetable and myriad challenges, Yamaha intends to complete the project before the OBD2 ports are required in India. If Yamaha doesn’t hurry up, the OBD2 launch date for the R7 and MT-07 may be delayed until 2024. The European market, on the other hand, is still waiting for the OBD2 ports to be mandated by 2024. Both models are expected to be CBUs in India, according to reports. Completely Built Units could eventually be available to Indian consumers (CBUs). Auto Car India’s interview with Yamaha India Chairperson Eishin Chihana is the source of this information.

Launch Date

No, this isn’t their fault, is it? However, we know that SIAM and Yamaha’s efforts have valid reasons behind them.
In addition, many two-wheeler manufacturers will be doomed as a result of the OBD regulation. Who are still not prepared to put its contents into action. Despite appearances to the contrary, reality is far more complex. There have been Yamaha YZF-R7 and MT-07 motorcycles circulating for some time.

Both were first spotted a few years ago, so they aren’t really newcomers to the market. There is no preventing Yamaha from discussing its ambitions to offer them in Japan and soon. Possibly even before the present importation date of March 31, 2023, expires.
In any case, Yamaha wants to make certain that they can assist any potential customers. That’s the problem we’re facing right now. MT-07 and MT-09 motorcycles will be available in India in 2022, according to Yamaha. Over a year after the MT-15 was launched in India, it is still available. So, the same scene may be done with MT-07.

Yamaha R7

Yamaha R7
As far as the R7 is concerned, it is a direct successor to the Yamaha R6. The R7 does not have an inline four-cylinder like the R6. An inline-twin engine with a new 689cc cross-plane crank has been developed. This engine has a maximum output of 73.4 horsepower and a maximum torque of 67 Nm. Power is transferred via a slipper-assist clutch in a 6-speed constant mesh gearbox. A diamond-shaped frame, fully adjustable USD forks, twin front disc brakes, and 17-inch wheels are all included in the R7 model. The R7 weighs 188 kg wet, making it one of the lightest motorcycles in the market. The R7 will be a design inspiration for the Yamaha R15 V4.

The R7’s frame is used in the MT-07, which is a street-legal variant. MT-based twins serve as the inspiration for this naked sport bike. The Yamaha MT-15 is based on the MT-07 in India. The upright sitting position is more suited to city commuting. The handling prowess of the MT line is legendary. The MT-07 differs greatly from the R7 in terms of specifications. The front suspension is telescopic, the dry weight is 184 kg, and the seat height is 805 mm, making it simple to get on and off for the rider.

Yamaha’s Indian subsidiary will not be producing these models. These two are likely to be sold at a discount. Because they’re geared at commuters.

A more substantial, more powerful, and better-equipped version of the MT-15 is now available in the United States as a street vehicle. MT-07 and MT-09 both come with 689cc parallel-twin engines, but the MT-09 features a 890cc inline triple.

The Indian market might get a new high-end sports bike from Yamaha by 2022. A fully-faired variant of the Yamaha MT-07 is the Yamaha R7. Although Yamaha’s sportbike lineup is small in comparison to those of Honda and Kawasaki, the company is working hard to meet the needs of the sport bike market in India.
